Behind the Scenes: Scanning Bulk MTG Cards

Scanning Bulk

I recently bought a massive lot of 6,900 rare bulk Magic: The Gathering cards from Hareruya, and now it’s time to get organized! I’ll be scanning and sorting 1,000 of those cards at high speed (timelapse style) as I prepare to list almost every card on my own website, https://koifishcards.com

Whether you’re curious about bulk MTG buys, love seeing card collections come together, or just enjoy the satisfying process of sorting and scanning, join me for this behind-the-scenes look at how I manage my growing Magic collection!

How I sort the cards

The most common approach to sort cards are alphabetically by set. I find this approach tedious, and I don't know the alphabetic order of Japanese cards. It would probably be a mess. Instead of sorting all cards sytematically, I store them in a labelled box. I know which box to look for when a card is sold that way. Here's how I do it:

  • Create two piles, one for English cards, and one for Japanese cards
  • Sort the majority of cards based on set (e.g. ori, 2x2)
  • Open the scan app on my phone, and select "bulk scan"
  • Scan approximately 300 cards for each list
  • Sort the cards based on color and store them in a labelled box
  • Export the list to CSV, and import it to my own system
  • This step is not displayed in the video

I spend roughly 2 hours sorting, scanning and registering 500 cards. That's ~4 cards per minute. How can I speed up the process?
